Challenging gender stereotype: gender performativity in the rose society novel

No image available for this title
This research aims to show the challenging of gender stereotypes by looking at the gender performativity of Adelina Amouteru from The Rose Society novel by Marie Lu. To present the data, the writer used a qualitative descriptive method and Judith Butler's theory of gender performativity. The research finds that Adelina Amouteru exhibits three kinds of gender performativity that challenge gender stereotypes: masculine performativity, romantic performativity, and drag performance. First, she defies a patriarchal society by engaging in masculine performativity. Second, her romantic performativity can be interpreted as escapism rather than conforming heteronormativity, Adelina's lack of romantic endings defies gender stereotypes and the notion that a female character should be devoted to a man. Third, Adelina subverts gender norms by controlling them while also manipulating gender stereotypes that are already present in society through drag performances. This research comes to the conclusion that Adelina Amouteru, the main character in The Rose Society, shows performativity that challenges gender stereotypes
