This research examines the slang words used by BTS fans on X (formerly
Twitter). The study focuses on identifying the types of slang, analyzing the word
formation processes, and exploring the functions of slang within this community.
Using Chapman’s theory of slang, George Yule’s word formation processes, and
Allan and Burridge’s functions of slang, the data were collected from 70 tweets
posted by BTS ARMY. The findings indicate that secondary slang dominates,
accounting for 53% of the data, while primary slang makes up 47%. Acronyms
are the most frequently used word formation process, representing 29% of the
slang analyzed. The primary function of slang in this community is to express
impressions, appearing in 40% of the data. The study concludes that the use of
slang helps to create a unique linguistic identity for the BTS ARMY. The slang
reflects the fans' creativity, emotional connections, and shared values, while also
reinforcing a sense of belonging and solidarity among members of the
community. It emphasizes the importance of informal language in building
community and enhancing the fan experience.
