This research explore the forgotten history of women in Africa and challenges
patriarchal system through an analysis of The Woman King (2022). Exploying
descriptive qualitative methods and cultural feminism theory by Linda Alcoff, the
research examines how the film portrays women's culture emphasizing solidarity,
courage, and resilience, while highlighting their leadership and agency. The analysis
reveal that The Woman King effectively challenges the patriarchal perspective that
historically marginalizes women as the second sex. By depicting women as leaders
and agents of change within Africa history, the film asserts that women’s roles are far
more significant and influential than traditionally acknowledged. The portrayal of
Nanisca and the Agojie warriors demonstrates women’s superior capabilities in
leadership and decision-making, countering the notion that these roles are inherently
male. The findings highlight that The Woman King not only celebrates women's
contributions, but also serves as an empowering narrative that inspires resistance to
gender inequality through a feminist lens. By promoting women's collective identity
and cultural values, the film offers a new perspective on the historical role of women
and encourages contemporary audiences to reconsider and appreciate the depth and
impact of women's contributions in history.
